How to test a microphone before a meeting
A 30-second routine to make sure your mic works and sounds clear before a call.
Quick routine
- Open the Microphone Test and press Grant access.
- Speak normally — the level meter should move and the waveform should react.
- Watch for a red “Clipping” indicator; if it appears often, lower your input gain in your OS settings.
- If the meter stays flat, pick the correct input device from the selector.
If it still doesn’t work
Close other apps that might be holding the microphone (video calls, recorders). Then check your operating system’s privacy settings to confirm the browser is allowed to use the microphone.
